In December 2009, Ellen met with art teacher Alice Engelmore and Director Michelle Giacotto of Sea Crest Elementary school to schedule a 6-session mural project with 20 students from Alice's 8th grade class. They chose the theme "Graduation". The mural project is the students gift to the school as they graduate 8th grade. Many of the students have been together since kindergarten.

Step 1: November 2009, the students drew their feelings and ideas about their upcoming graduation from 8th grade after viewing murals in Balmy Alley, in the Mission District in San Francisco (previously that day they had helped out serving food at a soup kitchen).

Step 2: December 2009, Ellen, Alice and the students created a rough composite drawing on butcher paper. Ellen created a final composite students colored in the composite drawing (on vellum).

Step 3: December 2009, The students colored in the drawing.
